Sustainability at Hilsea Lido

For now and for future generations

Sustainability is at the heart of the regeneration of Hilsea Lido. From the renovation works, delivered in partnership with Portsmouth City Council, to how we run and operate the pool with South Downs Leisure, sustainable practices have been embedded from the outset and will continue to guide how we operate for the future.

Making it happen

We believe meaningful change comes from working together, with and for the community. Together, we can reduce our environmental impact and ensure Hilsea Lido feels like a true holiday at home for years to come.

Energy and water use

The pool cover is used overnight to retain heat and reduce evaporation, helping to lower overall energy use. We use ACO products within the pool to support water quality and efficient use of chlorine. Where possible, we ask swimmers to wear swim hats. This helps reduce hair entering the filtration system and supports a longer filter life.

Cleaning products

We use eco-friendly cleaning products, as effective as traditional alternatives, without causing lasting environmental harm. These are:

  • Alcohol free
  • Phosphate free
  • Plant-based
  • Vegan friendly
  • Supplied in 100% recycled bottles

Reduce, reuse, recycle

We provide separate recycling bins for card, plastic and glass. You can help us reduce waste by:

Using reusable water bottles
Choosing durable swimwear
Taking your belongings home with you
Lower impact operations

Green travel

We encourage greener travel to and from Hilsea Lido wherever possible.

Going paperless

We are moving towards paperless operations, including electronic contracts, invoices and staff systems.

Our journey ahead

We know there is always more to do. We are continually learning, evolving and looking to improve, and will share updates as we continue on this journey.
